Remarqué pour sa moustache qu'il s'est laissé pousser en 1973, il est apparu dans la sitcom portant des lunettes à monture d'écaille et sans barbe. Parmi les autres premiers rôles de sa carrière, citons celui d'entraîneur de l'équipe olympique américaine de ski dans Downhill Racer (1969), celui de chef des pompiers de haut rang dans The Towering Inferno (1974) et celui d'un riche occidental dans Bite the Bullet (1975). Il a interprété un agent du FBI dans Attack on Terror: The FBI vs. the Ku Klux Klan (1975).
